Rick Curtis, Head Coach


Coach Rick Curtis begins his 31st year coaching high school football and his 8th year as Northwood High's head varsity football coach. His prior coaching experience includes stints at Servite High School, Laguna Hills High School, University High School, and Irvine High School. While at Irvine High School he was the athletic director (10 years) and defensive coordinator for Irvine High's consecutive CIF Championship teams of 1991, 1992, and 1993. Rick has 27 years as a business education and physical education instructor in the Irvine Unified School District. Coach Curtis also served as the school's initial athletic director for the first 5 years.

Coach Curtis is excited in leading this year's team after many traditions have been established by previous teams, including 3 consecutive Pacific Coast League championships, 5 consecutive trips to the CIF playoffs, and a trip to the CIF finals in 2005.  Coach Curtis is extremely proud of his coaching staff and he and his staff were chosen as the 2004 South Orange County All Star staff, and topped off that honor with a 22-7 victory in that year's Orange County Classic.

Coach Curtis and his lovely wife Mary, are the proud parents of 7 children; John, Steven, Asleigh, Leslie, Bryan, Sean, and Blake.

Zaverio Brenner, Offensive Line




Zaverio returns to Northwood High School after a two year absence. Coach Brenner has over 35 years of experience of coaching football at several schools in Orange County. Coach Brenner will once again be coaching the offensive line. Coach Brenner lives in Irvine with his lovely wife, Jill.



Mickey Dickson, Defensive Backs and Running Backs


Coach Dickson returns to Northwood High School for his fourth football season. He is excited to be joining the varsity staff after three years as the head coach of the freshman team. Before coming to Northwood, he was the defensive coordinaor at Millikan High School in Long Beach from 1993 to 1998. He is also very excited to begin his 17th year as a science teacher. He loves the opportunity to be able to connect scientific concepts to football techniques. He and his lovely wife, Brynn, live in Aliso Viejo with their eight year old daughter, Lakin.

 


Phil Roh, Wide Receivers



Coach Roh begins his second season with the Northwood Timberwolves after four years as a varsity running backs and wide receivers coach at Woodbridge High School.  Coach Roh taught English at Woodbridge and Dana Hills High School before joining the Northwood teaching staff.  Coach Roh resides in Irvine.

 

 


Barrett Schulenburg, Defensive Coordinator

Coach Schulenburg has coached for 35 yeas and is returning after a two year leave having just retired from 32 years of classroom teaching. Prior to NHS he was the athletic director at IHS for 15 years where he was a member of the varsity football staff when they won three consecutive CIF championships. In addition to his position as defensive coordinator, he is also a Track coach. He has spent most of his life focusing on football, playing four years in high school and three years in college. After spending time in the military during the Vietnam War, he completed graduate school at CSUF. Coach Schulenberg strives to motivate his players by teaching them that "what they give today they have forever, and what they don't give today, they've lost forever". Coach Schulenburg and his wife Janis live in Tustin and have three sons, Michael, Adam and Andy and a daughter Mila. They also enjoy four grandchildren.

Dean Toohey, Defensive Ends


Coach Toohey returns to NHS for his 9th season as well as his first year as co-athletic director for Northwood High School. His passion for education nutrition, conditioning, and strength, of our team continues to be his focus for the Timberwolves. His positvie impact with the players earned him the coveted "Golden Touch Award" in 2002. Along with coaching the outside linebackers Coach Toohey works with the special education department at Northwood. He stands behind his motto, "Attitude is everything". He and his wife, Sandie, and two sons Dylan and Colin live in Anaheim.


Doug Mirich, Defensive Line


Coach Mirich begins his first season with the Timberolves varsity staff. He spent 37 years in the Tustin Unified School District before retiring as Tustin High School's Athletic Director in 2006. Coach Mirich has 35 years of coaching experience in multiple sports, but his primary focus was football at THS and Santa Ana College. He's a graduate of Arizona State University and received his masters in Administration from USIU. He lives in Northwood with is wife Nancy and misses his daughters Stephanie, who lives on Maui and Jill, who lives in St. Louis.

Dave Harper, Special Teams




Coach Dave Harper is starting his third season with the Timberwolf varsity staff after coaching four years at the lower levels. He attended Magnolia High School and graduated from California State University at Fullerton. Coach Harper resides in Irvine with his wife Annie and sons, Matt and Kyle.



Dave Catalano, Running Backs



Coach Catalano begins his 4th season with the Timberwolf varsity staff after 3 successful seasons as a freshman assistant and one year as the junior varsity head coach. Coach Catalano graduated from Irvine High School in 1995 and was a member of Irvine's 1993 CIF championship football team. Coach Catalano has a large family following and would like to thank them for their love and support.

Andie Sepulveda, Athletic Trainer




Andie Sepulveda is in her 9th year with Northwood High School athletics. Andie has been instrumental in keeping the football players healthy and playing at their peak performances. No injury, minor or severe, goes undetected or untreated.






Ernie Medina, Equipment Manager






Ernie makes sure all player equipment is in tip-top shape. He has been with Northwood High since its inaugural year. His responsibilities have grown as the schoool has grown.






Rick Crowell, Video Productions


Rick Crowell has been with Northwood football since its inception. His initial responsibilities were limited to providing game films to the Timberwolf coaching staff. In 2001 he created the Northwood-Football.com website and continues to maintain it to this day. In 2002 Rick began keeping team and individual player statistics for the Northwood football team. Rick's son Casey was a member of Northwood's first football championship team, the 2001 Northwood Timberwolves.
